Mickey Mouse 80 Years On

Mickey Mouse 80 Years On

Eighty years ago, a clothes-wearing rodent named Mickey Mouse whistled his way onto the silver screen, as "Steamboat Willie" made its cinema debut at the Colony Theater in New York.
That day, 18th November 1928, is widely considered the official birthday of Mickey Mouse, even if he was born of the imagination of Walt Disney months before his movie debut and also featured in a short animated film called Plane Crazy, which was made before Steamboat Willie but released afterwards.
Mickey Mouse was created almost by accident: Walt Disney’s first cartoon character was a rabbit called Oswald, but the man who was to rise to become a pre-eminent force in global entertainment lost the rights to the rabbit in 1927 and returned to the drawing board.
He came up with a mouse, whom he wanted to call Mortimer.
According to popular legend, his wife preferred the name Mickey, and Walt Disney deferred to her choice.
The storyline of Steamboat Willie is flimsy, politically incorrect and features little, if any, comprehensible dialogue.
But the cartoon marked an animation landmark with its synchronized sound track that includes Mickey whistling and blowing raspberries at the irascible ship’s captain, a large tobacco-chewing cat called Captain Pete.
In roughly seven minutes, viewers watch as Mickey Mouse is kicked out of the steering room of a riverboat by Captain Pete; hoists Minnie Mouse on board using a crane that grabs her by the knickers; swings a cat by the tail, strangles a goose and plays keyboard on some suckling piglets as the American folk song "Turkey in the Straw" plays from the innards of a goat.

Michael Jackson converts to Islam

Pop singer Michael Jackson has converted to Islam and changed his name to Mikaeel, the 50-year-old star, pledged his allegiance to the Koran in a ceremony at a friend’s mansion in Los Angeles, a British tabloid reported.
Jackson sat on the floor wearing a tiny hat after an Imam was summoned to officiate — days before the singer is due to appear at London’s High Court where he is being sued by an Arab Sheik, the paper said on 21st November.
The star decided to adopt the new religion while he was recording a song at the home of his friend where a Jehovah’s witness was brought up to help him through the ceremony.
Apparently the star of hits like ‘the Way You Make Me Feel-was convinced by his producer and songwriter friends David Wharnsby and Phillip Bubal.
"They began talking to him about their beliefs, and how they thought they had become better people after they converted. Michael soon began warming to the idea.
"An Imam was summoned from the mosque and Michael went through the shahada, which is the Muslim declaration of belief," the source revealed.
Mikaeel is the name of one of Allah’s angels.
"Jacko rejected an alternative name, Mustafa meaning "the chosen one", the source added.

Esha Deol excited to be back at home

Esha Deol says she is excited about moving back into her Juhu bungalow that was under renovation for the past one year. She says all her best memories are associated with that house :“We miss our old home. That’s where all our best memories are. That’s where Ahana and I grew up. And that’s where all of mom’s friends from the industry stay. So, yes, we plan to move back as soon as the renovation is done. One of the main problems in our Juhu home was the waterlogging in monsoon. The elevation work has been done. The outside is complete. And now the interiors are being done.”
In 2006, Esha, her mom Hema Malini and sister Ahana moved into their bungalow in Goregaon.
Though the three loved the far-from-the-madding-crowd atmosphere at Goregaon and had decided to stay put in their sighing haven, the family is now planning to move back to Juhu to their original place.
But Esha says there were advantages of staying in Goregaon.
“Travelling to Film City for shooting is so easy here. That set of an aircraft that they put up at Film City for Hijack was just a hop away. Every day I’d get into my car and drive straight into the aircraft,” said Esha whose last release was Hijack that tanked.
But the actress says she had a ball shooting the film.
“It was an action film. I was an airhostess wearing a skirt. So I couldn’t do any stunts. But the interesting part of the film was that I don’t have a hint of a romantic association with Shiney Ahuja.
“Now I’m also doing Shivum Nair’s Exchange Offer with Rahul Bose. It’s a very contemporary film about a young couple. And working with Rahul is so different from working with any of my other co-stars.”
Esha also went through a learning experience when she did an item song with Govinda in Money Hai Toh Honey Hai.
“I did that number only to work with Govinda. I’m his biggest fan. As a child I used to watch some of his films almost every day. Dancing with him is a joy. He knows exactly how to handle the body contact in the dancing movements.”

The art of producing a play is very complex. Various artistic ingredients are integrated harmoniously to offer great theatrical moments to the audience who applaud actors and directors, forgetting the contributions of backstage artistes in making the production a work of art. To recognise the creativity of these dedicated but forgotten artistes, Chaman Lal Memorial Society has been honouring every year five backstage creative collaborators for the past 11 years. This year’s awardees are Dharam Pal Sharma, Syed Ahmed, Raghunandan Singh, Bachchan Singh Rawat and Ram Dulare. The Society has launched yet another ambitious programme in the form of five-day theatre festival called Naipathy Natya Samaroh. This year two plays from Delhi and one each from Lucknow, Udaipur and Bhopal are featured. LTG auditorium was the venue of the festival. Beginning from this past week, "Muavze" is one of the plays of the festival that offered rewarding experience, often provoking and entertaining. The play has been written by the late Bhisham Sahni, a noted Hindi novelist whose works depict antagonism prevailing in Indian society, exposing corruption, obscurantism, communalism and exploitation.
"Muavze", directed by Surendra Sharma, a graduate of the National School of Drama, is a powerful social satire that exposes rank opportunism of Indian political class, utter inefficiency and apathy of the police force towards the common man and a social climate that allows criminals to acquire control of the state apparatus. The core of the play is the way communal riots are turned into a trade by unscrupulous elements of society. At another level, it shows the depravity and inhumanity of those who are condemned to live in lower depth. Though the script is not well knit, director Sharma has imaginatively conceived mass scenes, making them visually captivating and vividly alive. The production is suffused with wit and humour, retaining the sharp edge of satire. The climactic scene is a tour de force with undercurrents of anxiety, suspense, fear and irony.
The cast consists of nearly 40 performers. Vijendra Kaushik as an anti-social element turned into a powerful political force who gives a convincing performance. Dhruv Singh as a confused and overworked police commissioner, Mohan Yadav as Gumasta, Sharan Makkar as Soothra and Vidya Bhushan Kulshreshtha as the cruel and greedy father of a hapless daughter give impressive performances.
Laxmi Naranin Lal’s "Vyaktigat" presented by the Performers, Udaipur conveys the absurdity of the man-woman relationships and the futility of the attempts to communicate with one another.
Obsession with amassing wealth through corrupt means finally leads the destruction of the noble feeling of love. Directed by Anukampa Laeek, the production is neat.
By using the projection to reveal the past and inner conflicts of the characters Anukampa displays innovative approach to a production that had been directed by some eminent directors before.
Her stress appears to be to highlight the external attributes rather than creating an ambience that enables the performers to penetrate into the inner turmoil of their characters. Manish Sharma as the husband gives an impressive performance. Shipra Chatterjee as the wife should have imparted intricacy to her portrayal to make it convincing.
